Chelsea have confirmed the departure of forward David Datro Fofana, who has completed a permanent move to Swiss Super League side Servette on the eve of the summer transfer deadline.
The Ivorian striker joined the west London club in January 2023 but leaves having made little impact on the first team. Over his two-and-a-half-year stay, Fofana featured just four times for Chelsea's senior side, accumulating only 113 minutes of action, largely due to a spell hampered by injuries. He also turned out twice for the club's Under-21 squad during his time at Stamford Bridge.
In search of regular game time, Fofana was sent out on a series of loan spells away from Chelsea, representing Union Berlin, Burnley, Goztepe, Fatih Karagumruk and, most recently, Strasbourg. Despite the change of scenery on each occasion, he was unable to establish himself as a fixture in any of those sides on a long-term basis, and a return to Chelsea's first-team plans never materialized.
Servette, 17-time champions of Switzerland, have now given the forward a fresh opportunity. The deal is reported to be worth an initial €2.5million (£3million), with a further €1million (£857,000) available in potential add-ons.
Fofana's exit comes as Chelsea continue to reshape their squad in the closing stages of the transfer window, with further business expected before Deadline Day concludes. Among the other situations still developing is that of winger Mykhailo Mudryk, who has yet to appear in a matchday squad this season. Mudryk had been suspended for doping violations, but that ban was lifted earlier in the summer, and he is still anticipated to depart on loan before the window shuts.
Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez's future at the club is also uncertain following Chelsea's move to sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa. The Argentine shot-stopper made his full debut for the Blues against Brighton just hours after his transfer was finalized. Sanchez, meanwhile, was omitted entirely from the squad for that fixture, having endured a difficult outing in the previous match against Fulham. In his absence, 21-year-old academy product Mike Penders was handed a place among the substitutes.
Chelsea are also weighing changes in midfield as the window draws to a close. Enzo Fernandez's status remains a talking point, with speculation persisting over whether he could leave the club before the deadline. Regardless of the outcome, the Blues appear to have prepared contingency options in that area of the pitch, having been linked with a trio of midfielders: Roma's Manu Kone, Bournemouth's Alex Scott, and Monaco's Lamine Camara.
With the transfer window entering its final hours, Chelsea's business is expected to continue right up until the deadline, as the club looks to fine-tune its squad across multiple positions. Fofana's move to Servette represents one of several departures the Blues are set to sanction, as they balance incomings with outgoings in what has already proven to be an eventful summer of change at Stamford Bridge.
