Arsenal are exploring a late move for Lyon forward Malick Fofana as Tuesday's transfer deadline approaches, with the Premier League champions continuing to assess options in attack despite an already busy summer of business.
The 21-year-old Belgium international has been offered to the Gunners and is understood to be open to a switch to north London. Arsenal's interest in Fofana is not new; the club have monitored him since last summer, when a host of other Premier League sides, including Chelsea, Liverpool, Fulham and Nottingham Forest, also made contact with Lyon over his availability. Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Napoli were among the European clubs who registered interest in the same period.
Fofana, who predominantly operates on the left but is capable of playing across the front line, has also been linked with Sunderland and Crystal Palace this summer. Lyon's failure to secure Champions League qualification has increased the pressure on the club to cash in on some of their prized assets, and reports suggest Fofana could be available for a fee in the region of £50million.
Mikel Arteta's side have already reshaped their forward line this window. Christos Tzolis has settled in quickly since arriving to replace Leandro Trossard, who departed for Besiktas, while Gabriel Martinelli has completed a big-money exit to Al Hilal in a deal reported to be worth around £60million. Gabriel Jesus is also expected to leave, with a move to Barcelona in the region of £8.5million under discussion, and Fabio Vieira is likewise poised to depart before deadline day concludes.
Despite the incoming interest in Fofana, Julian Alvarez remains Arsenal's primary target in attack. The Atletico Madrid forward has long been viewed as the ideal marquee addition to Arteta's squad, but there has been little indication from the player or his camp that he is ready to leave the Spanish capital. Atletico have also been reluctant to sanction a sale, leaving Arsenal to consider alternatives as the clock runs down. Arsenal had previously pursued Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr with a substantial financial package, only for the Brazilian to sign a contract extension and remain at the Bernabeu.
Should the Alvarez pursuit ultimately fail, Fofana represents one of the more realistic paths to strengthening the front line before the window shuts. However, sources close to the club suggest Arsenal are not desperate to add for the sake of it, given the depth already present in the squad. Eberechi Eze impressed after being introduced from the bench in the win over Coventry, operating on the left flank, and could see more minutes in that role as the season progresses. That shift would, in turn, potentially open a path for Ethan Nwaneri to feature more centrally as backup to Martin Odegaard.
Arsenal's willingness to commit significant resources to marquee signings has been evident throughout the summer, but the club appears equally prepared to trust its current options if the right deal for a difference-making forward does not materialize. Whether that means a Fofana deal is completed, or Arsenal instead stand pat on deadline day, should become clear in the hours ahead.
