Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta faces a selection dilemma ahead of his side's Premier League trip to Villa Park, with midfielder Bruno Guimaraes still working his way back from a groin problem that has kept him out of recent action.
The £75million summer arrival was absent for Arsenal's league opener against Coventry City after picking up the issue, having also been substituted during a warm-up fixture in Cardiff the previous week while nursing his thigh with an ice pack. "We just managed the last few days with him [Guimaraes]," Arteta said. "He's out on the pitch, he's been in training sessions. But we need to manage the load to get to Monday in the best possible condition to be available to be selected. He's potentially available."
Should Guimaraes fail to prove his fitness in time, Arteta may choose to keep faith with the same starting eleven that has served the club so far this season, rather than risk disrupting momentum against a Villa team looking to bounce back from a disappointing start to their campaign. Unai Emery's side were beaten heavily on the opening weekend of the season, losing 4-0 away at Brighton & Hove Albion.
Elsewhere in Arsenal's squad, defender Ezri Konsa is set to be included among the matchday options and could be handed his first involvement against the club he left in the summer. However, reports suggest Arteta is more likely to introduce the centre-back as a substitute rather than hand him an immediate starting role in what would be an emotionally charged return fixture.
In other squad news, winger Reiss Nelson's time at the Emirates Stadium has officially come to an end, with the club confirming a mutual agreement to terminate his contract. The move makes Nelson a free agent, bringing to a close his lengthy association with the north London club.
On the injury front, Arsenal continue to be without Jurrien Timber, who underwent minor groin surgery during the off-season. Although the Dutch full-back has recently increased his training load, he remains unavailable for selection.
