Arsenal have continued their busy summer recruitment activity by confirming the signings of Habeeb Ogunneye and Axel Donczew, two young additions who will primarily bolster the club's development pathway rather than the first-team squad, as Deadline Day approaches.
Ogunneye joins the north London club on a free transfer following his departure from Manchester United. As part of the agreement, United have secured a 40 per cent sell-on clause, meaning they stand to benefit financially should the young defender move on for a fee in the future. Speaking about his move, Ogunneye expressed enthusiasm about joining one of English football's biggest institutions. "It feels great to be here, it's such a big club," he said. The defender also revealed a personal connection to the switch, given his family ties to the area. "I've got family who live in Hackney, so it's literally a full-circle moment. It's fantastic [to have my family here]."
Ogunneye added that Arsenal's interest made the decision straightforward for him. "When I heard [Arsenal] were interested in me, I said to my agents it's a no-brainer. Seeing all the young players that are coming through as well, so I just wanted to come straight away." He also pointed to the calibre of players already at the club as a motivating factor behind his switch. "I just wanted to be part of that group, and win games together. It's good playing with good players, good defenders; it's only going to better you."
Meanwhile, Arsenal have also secured the services of Axel Donczew, who arrives from Cardiff City. The Welsh youngster already holds a notable piece of club history, having become Cardiff's youngest-ever first-team player when he made his debut against Newport County in the EFL Trophy at just 15 years and 234 days old last season.
Donczew has joined Arsenal as part of their first-year scholarship intake. Alongside this, he has put pen to paper on a pre-contract agreement that will pave the way for him to sign professional terms with the reigning Premier League champions once he becomes eligible.
