With the summer transfer window set to slam shut on Tuesday at 23:00 BST, clubs across the Premier League are racing against time to complete a flurry of significant deals, more than two months after the market first opened on 15 June.
The most closely watched saga surrounds Julian Alvarez, whose future at Atletico Madrid appears increasingly untenable. The 26-year-old Argentina international, who reached the World Cup final with his country, wants to leave the Spanish club, but Atletico have refused to sanction a move to fierce rivals Barcelona. Arsenal, however, remain a genuine option, with Atletico seeking a fee in the region of 150 million euros (£128m). Alvarez has skipped several training sessions and was absent from the squad that faced Sevilla, with manager Diego Simeone citing fitness issues. Simeone has since said he will "do everything" possible to make the striker feel valued if he returns to the fold.
At Chelsea, Enzo Fernandez's position is also under scrutiny after he missed the win over Brighton amid strong interest from Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's assistant-turned-Chelsea boss connection comes through Enzo Maresca, who worked with Fernandez at Stamford Bridge and is keen to strengthen his midfield following the exits of Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders. Any deal for Fernandez would likely eclipse the £116m City paid for Elliot Anderson earlier in the window.
Should Fernandez depart, Chelsea could move for Monaco's Lamine Camara, who has already earned 49 caps for Senegal, as a direct replacement. The Blues have been remarkably active in the market, with more than 30 players expected to leave and player sales projected to surpass last season's Premier League record of £300m. Mykhailo Mudryk is seeking a loan exit, while the futures of Pedro Neto and Tosin Adarabioyo remain unresolved.
Liverpool are also at the centre of significant movement. Manchester City have opened talks over Cody Gakpo, with the Dutch international reportedly open to the switch. However, Liverpool are only willing to let Gakpo go if they can bring in an additional attacking reinforcement alongside Bradley Barcola. Tottenham have also shown interest in Gakpo, but City appear to be his preferred destination, with a fee close to £85m under discussion.
Elsewhere, Tottenham are in advanced discussions to sign Iliman Ndiaye from Everton, with Richarlison poised to move in the opposite direction back to Goodison Park after telling head coach Roberto de Zerbi he wanted to leave. Terms for Ndiaye, 26, are largely agreed between the clubs, though Manchester City's interest could complicate matters. Ndiaye had previously turned down several contract extensions at Everton and held talks with Saudi side Al-Hilal earlier in the summer.
Everton are separately closing in on a loan return for Jack Grealish from Manchester City, with the England international choosing Goodison Park over a reunion with boyhood club Aston Villa, despite Villa's interest.
Newcastle, fresh off unveiling Nico Gonzalez, are continuing to pursue further additions, with manager Matthias Jaissle keen on Lille's versatile forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo. The 21-year-old, who made his Belgium debut in June, fits the profile Newcastle have targeted this summer, though a deal remains complex given the timeframe.
At Manchester United, attention centres on Joshua Zirkzee, with Fiorentina's loan interest cooling and Juventus emerging as a suitor, contingent on Jonathan David's move to Atletico Madrid. Should Zirkzee depart, United may look to bring in reinforcements at left-back or in attack, potentially via loan deals, before the window shuts.
