Charlton Athletic sit alone at the top of the Championship after a narrow 1-0 win over bottom side Preston, with Karlan Grant scoring his first goal since returning to the club on a free transfer from West Brom. The victory means Charlton remain the only club in the division with a perfect record, and it marks the first time since the 1992-93 season that the club have won their opening three league fixtures.
Millwall had also started the campaign unbeaten but that record was shattered emphatically at St Mary's, where Southampton produced a devastating display to win 5-1. QPR also moved to seven points courtesy of a comeback win at Blackburn. Ryoya Morishita's brilliant volley had given Rovers the lead just after the hour mark, but Paul Smyth equalised within two minutes and Jimmy Dunne headed home the winner in the 74th minute.
Middlesbrough continued their strong start to the season with a 3-1 win over West Brom at the Riverside. Will Lankshear scored twice, taking his tally to six goals in five games since arriving from Tottenham in the summer, with both strikes coming from rebounds off goalkeeper Max O'Leary. Norwich finally got their season moving with a 4-1 home victory over struggling Burnley, scoring twice inside the opening five minutes before further goals from Mo Touré and Andre Brooks sealed the win. Burnley's afternoon worsened when Josh Laurent, who had scored their consolation goal, was sent off for a second yellow card.
Lincoln claimed a historic result, beating previously unbeaten Bolton 1-0 courtesy of Ben House's 66th-minute strike—the club's first Championship win in 65 years. Bristol City beat Portsmouth 2-1 thanks to goals from Lorent Tolaj and Jason Knight, while Cardiff and Sheffield United shared a 2-2 draw, leaving both sides still searching for their first win of the season.
