Paris Saint-Germain were forced into another late rescue act on Friday, with defender Marquinhos scoring a stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a 2-2 draw at Lille, extending the reigning Ligue 1 champions' uneasy start to the season after they were also held by Rennes on the opening weekend.
Lille looked set to hand PSG a first defeat of the campaign after taking control of the match. Icelandic playmaker Hákon Haraldsson opened the scoring in the 21st minute, finishing off a clever reverse pass from Olivier Giroud with a curling shot that beat goalkeeper Matvei Safonov. PSG struggled to break down a well-organised Lille defence for long spells, with the hosts happy to sit deep and push the visitors wide, limiting their usual attacking fluency.
The hosts appeared to have sealed all three points when Dilane Bakwa struck in the 84th minute, putting Lille 2-1 ahead with time running out. But PSG produced a dramatic late surge. Vitinha pulled his side level in the first minute of stoppage time with a well-placed strike into the top corner, and moments later turned provider, setting up Marquinhos to head home the equaliser and complete a remarkable comeback deep into added time. The result leaves PSG without a win in their opening two league matches, raising early questions about their title defence despite the depth of talent in their squad.
Elsewhere in Europe, Bayern Munich made an emphatic statement of intent in the Bundesliga, thrashing Stuttgart 5-1 at the Allianz Arena. A dominant second-half showing saw Bayern find the net through Dayot Upamecano, Michael Olise, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Luis Díaz, with the German champions also spurning several other clear chances. Stuttgart's Josha Vagnoman had a night to forget and remember in equal measure, netting for his own side before also contributing to a Bayern goal, having briefly drawn Stuttgart level early in the second period.
The victory stretched Bayern's unbeaten run to 15 matches and served as an early reminder of the ruthless efficiency that carried them to a 16-point title win last season, when they scored a record 122 league goals. Stuttgart, who finished fourth in the previous campaign, were given little chance to settle as Bayern repeatedly cut through their defence.
In Serie A, Milan continued their strong start with a 2-0 win over Venezia at San Siro. Gonçalo Ramos, a €74m summer signing from PSG, opened his account for the club with a sharp finish from a tight angle in the 69th minute, before a late own goal from Redouane Halhal wrapped up the points. Ramos, however, was quick to play down the individual achievement. "The most important thing isn't my goal, it's the win," he said. "I should have scored more than one goal tonight."
The match marked Milan's first home fixture since the death of club legend Franco Baresi, and fans paid emotional tribute before kick-off, including a large banner in his honour at San Siro. Milan, who had opened their season with a 2-1 win at Torino, now sit with two victories from two matches.
In Spain's La Liga, Racing Santander picked up their first win since returning to the top flight, beating Elche 3-2, while Alavés edged past Villarreal 1-0 in another closely contested encounter.
