Aston Villa have strengthened their midfield options by signing former Bayern Munich player Leon Goretzka on a free transfer, following his departure from the German giants at the end of last season after eight years at the Allianz Arena.
The 31-year-old Germany international arrives at Villa Park with an impressive trophy haul, including seven Bundesliga titles, a Champions League triumph in 2020, and a Club World Cup. He has also earned 73 caps for his country and featured for Germany at this summer's World Cup.
Speaking about his decision to join the Midlands club, Goretzka explained that the move followed a period of reflection after leaving Bayern. "I had a bit of long vacation, and it was a process to find out what I really wanted. From the first moment, I had a really good feeling, and I'm really happy to be here," he said. He also praised his early discussions with Unai Emery, adding: "I had a good feeling from the first conversation with the coach. Aston Villa is a really big club. I want to help the team to achieve their goals and to bring my experience that I have from my whole career."
Goretzka highlighted the difference in intensity he expects in England compared to Germany, noting: "I'm really looking forward to playing in these kinds of big games every few days, and this is probably the biggest difference to the Bundesliga, where you have only several great games with big opponents."
The timing of the signing comes as Villa look to reinforce their squad following a difficult start to the season, having suffered a 4-0 defeat away to Brighton in their opening Premier League fixture. The club is also without midfielder Amadou Onana, who is sidelined until next year after sustaining a knee injury while playing for Belgium at the World Cup.
Goretzka's exit from Bayern had been anticipated for some time, with the club reportedly open to selling him for the right price in recent seasons. A proposed loan move to Galatasaray in 2024 did not materialize after he turned it down, while his significant wage demands limited interest from other suitors. Ultimately, his contract expired in the summer, allowing him to leave as a free agent. There had also been talks with AC Milan, though those negotiations did not progress.
During his peak years, Goretzka was regarded as one of Germany's premier box-to-box midfielders, combining physical presence with strong technical and tactical attributes. However, his effectiveness diminished over time, partly due to a string of injuries, and he gradually lost his starting role under Bayern manager Vincent Kompany, especially after the emergence of academy product Aleksandar Pavlovic. Similarly, his opportunities with the national team became limited, with Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann using him mainly as a substitute during the World Cup, where he played a total of 96 minutes across three appearances.
At Villa, Goretzka will compete for a midfield spot alongside recent signing Johan Manzambi, a highly rated young Swiss player recruited from the Bundesliga. Comparisons between the two are natural given their similar profiles as tall, box-to-box midfielders, though Manzambi's superior athleticism may allow him to adapt more quickly to the physical demands of the Premier League.
Villa's summer has been marked by significant departures, including defender Ezri Konsa's £51m move to Arsenal, forward Morgan Rogers' £117m transfer to Chelsea, midfielder Youri Tielemans' switch to Manchester United, and left-back Lucas Digne's return to Paris Saint-Germain. Additionally, the club's ability to retain striker Ollie Watkins remains uncertain amid reported interest from Saudi club Al-Hilal.
While Goretzka's arrival brings a wealth of experience and pedigree to Villa's engine room, questions remain about how much he can contribute on the pitch given his recent struggles with fitness and form. Nonetheless, the move offers him a fresh opportunity to reestablish himself in a new league after a challenging final stretch at Bayern Munich.
