Atletico Madrid's board of directors has issued a firm statement reaffirming its refusal to sell striker Julian Alvarez to Barcelona, intensifying a summer-long transfer saga that has put the club, the player, and two of Spanish and English football's biggest names on a collision course.
The 26-year-old Argentina international has made his desire to join Barcelona clear, but Atletico's board says it stands unanimously behind the club's decision not to negotiate with the Catalan giants. In the statement, the club said it remains open to "standard transfer market negotiations when conducted in a professional, ethical and respectful manner," but accused Barcelona of failing to meet that standard.
"We fully stand behind the club's previously communicated position that FC Barcelona failed to meet these requirements and, as a result, there will not be any negotiation and there is zero consideration of an Alvarez transfer to Barcelona," the statement read.
The board also addressed Alvarez directly, expressing hope that the forward would accept the decision and refocus on his responsibilities at the club. "Atletico de Madrid trust that our player will understand the decision and will remain focused on helping the club achieve its goals, just as he has done during the two seasons he has been defending our colours," the statement continued.
The tension between the two parties has been escalating for weeks. Alvarez, who signed with Atletico until 2030, was booed by supporters during a substitute appearance in the club's draw with Villarreal and was absent from a midweek fixture reportedly due to illness. Earlier in the week, Atletico told Spanish outlet Marca there was a "zero per cent chance" of the player moving to Barcelona, going as far as to claim the club itself was the true victim of the saga.
"The player is being portrayed as a victim, but the only victims in the Julian case are us," the club said. "They have harmed us economically and socially. There is zero per cent chance of selling him to Barca." Atletico further suggested the situation was less about finances and more about principle, stating: "A campaign has been created with many lies and half-truths. The only one who pays for this is Atletico."
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has publicly confirmed the club's interest in Alvarez, describing Barcelona as "very interested" in signing him and pressing Atletico to accept an offer. So far, Barcelona's only formal bid for the striker stands at €100 million (£86 million), which Atletico has rejected.
With the transfer window closing in a week, Arsenal remain in the picture as an alternative destination. The Premier League club, managed by admirer Mikel Arteta, has continued to monitor Alvarez's situation and is reportedly prepared to make a late move. There have been suggestions Arsenal could include another forward in a prospective deal, with names such as Viktor Gyokeres or Gabriel Jesus mentioned as possible options to sweeten an offer for Atletico.
Despite Arsenal's interest, obstacles remain. Alvarez is said to have reservations about a return to the Premier League, partly due to visa complications that could affect his family's ability to relocate to or visit him in the UK. However, some reports suggest the forward may be softening his stance and warming to the idea of a move to north London, especially given Atletico's insistence that Barcelona is not an option.
Atletico will hope to have Alvarez, who scored eight league goals last season, fit and available for their upcoming LaLiga trip to Sevilla, even as speculation over his future continues to dominate headlines with the deadline fast approaching.
