Brentford are closing in on the signing of El Hadji Malick Diouf from West Ham United after the two clubs reached a verbal agreement over a transfer worth up to £40m, according to reports.
The deal for the 21-year-old Senegal left-back is structured as an initial £35m payment, with a further £5m available through add-ons. West Ham have given the green light for the move, and Diouf has been cleared to undergo a medical ahead of finalising his switch to west London.
Diouf's departure comes just over a year after he arrived in English football, having joined West Ham from Slavia Prague for around £19m last summer. Should the transfer go through at the reported valuation, it would represent a substantial profit for the Hammers on a player who spent only one season at the London Stadium.
The young defender made 34 appearances for West Ham last term, contributing five assists as the club endured a difficult campaign that ended in relegation from the Premier League after an 18th-placed finish. Despite starting the Hammers' Championship season opener against Burnley, Diouf has since been left out of the matchday squad for the club's following two fixtures, a sign that his exit was being negotiated behind the scenes.
For Brentford, Diouf has been identified as their top defensive target throughout the summer transfer window. Talks between the two parties had reportedly cooled at one stage before being revived this week, ultimately leading to the agreement now in place. His arrival would return him to the Premier League after just one season away, giving him the chance to continue his development in England's top flight with a different club.
Brentford's pursuit of Diouf fits into what has already been an active summer of recruitment under head coach Keith Andrews. The Bees have already added striker Callum Wilson, midfielder Mamadou Sangare, centre-back Jannik Schuster and winger Jaidon Anthony to their squad, and Diouf would become the fifth new face to join the club before the window closes.
Andrews guided Brentford to a ninth-placed finish in the Premier League last season, narrowly missing out on European qualification on goal difference — a campaign widely regarded as one of the club's best in recent memory. The momentum has carried into the new season, with Brentford opening their Premier League campaign in style by beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-0. They are next in action away to Leeds United, looking to build on that impressive start.
On the international stage, Diouf has established himself as a regular for Senegal after breaking into the national team last year. He featured four times for his country at this summer's World Cup, further raising his profile and reinforcing Brentford's interest in securing his signature.
With the move edging closer to completion, attention will now turn to how quickly Diouf can be integrated into Brentford's plans following his medical, and whether he could feature for Andrews' side in the coming weeks as the Bees continue their pursuit of another strong Premier League campaign.
