Cardiff City have strengthened their defensive options by securing centre-back Krystian Bielik on a permanent transfer from Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion. The Poland international has put pen to paper on a three-year deal at Cardiff City Stadium, with the fee involved not disclosed by either club.
The 28-year-old, who can also play as a defensive midfielder, becomes the Bluebirds' fourth summer signing, joining goalkeeper Nathan Trott, midfielder Jack Moylan and defender Calum Scanlon, who has rejoined the club on loan from Liverpool.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Bielik expressed his delight at completing the move. "I'm very excited, I'm finally here and I couldn't be happier," he told Cardiff's official website. "I'm looking forward to starting with the team as soon as possible and focusing on the first game."
Bielik's career has taken him through several English clubs since he arrived from Polish side Legia Warsaw to join Arsenal back in 2015. Since then he has featured for Birmingham City, Walsall, Charlton Athletic and Derby County, before a move to West Brom last summer. At the Hawthorns, he made 17 Championship appearances last season as the club narrowly avoided relegation to League One, eventually finishing 21st in the table.
Despite previously lining up against Cardiff as an opponent, Bielik made clear he has always respected the challenge of playing at their ground. "I've played a few times against Cardiff City, and it's never been an easy place to come to," he said. "It's always got a great atmosphere, so it will be a pleasure to be here playing for this club."
The timing of the move could hardly be better for Cardiff, who currently find themselves without a single fit senior centre-back. Will Fish, Dylan Lawlor and Calum Chambers are all sidelined through injury, while Gabriel Osho — also unavailable — is reportedly nearing a return to full training and match fitness. Bielik's arrival therefore provides an immediate boost to a defensive unit stretched thin heading into the new campaign.
The defender himself sounded ready to be thrown straight into action, saying: "I'm ready, fit and healthy, and can't wait to start with the team tomorrow and prepare for the big game on Saturday." That fixture sees Cardiff host Chris Wilder's Sheffield United at Cardiff City Stadium, kicking off at 15:00 BST, and Bielik is understood to be in contention to make his debut in that match given the club's shortage of fit options at the back.
