Manchester City have wrapped up a busy stretch of squad rebuilding, confirming the arrival of Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille while sending Omar Marmoush and Nico González out of the exit door as part of the club's ongoing midfield overhaul.
The 18-year-old Bouaddi has joined for a fee understood to total around €100m, comprising a €95m base payment plus €5m in add-ons, and has put pen to paper on a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium. The Morocco international is expected to be included in Enzo Maresca's squad immediately, with a trip to Crystal Palace on Friday marking a potential first assignment for the youngster.
Bouaddi's ascent through the ranks has been remarkably swift. He became Lille's youngest ever player when he made his debut against KÍ Klaksvík in October 2023, just three days after turning 16. Since then he has racked up 96 appearances for the Ligue 1 club, predominantly operating as a holding midfielder.
Reflecting on the move, Bouaddi expressed excitement about the challenge ahead. "I am happy with the progress I have made so far, but I also know I can improve so much. This is undoubtedly the best place for me to do that. This club demands trophies and I will give everything to make sure we are challenging for every title," he said.
City's director of football, Hugo Viana, was equally enthusiastic about the signing, describing Bouaddi as a player with immense promise. "Ayyoub's potential is extremely high – a player equipped with everything a top midfielder needs. At just 18, he already has outstanding football intelligence and that will only improve under the guidance of Enzo," Viana said.
The teenager's arrival forms part of a broader reshaping of City's midfield options, following the departures of Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders earlier in the window. González now looks set to become the latest central midfielder to leave, with a £52m move to Newcastle United agreed. City have already bolstered their ranks with the £116m acquisition of Elliott Anderson from Nottingham Forest, and are reportedly readying an approach for Chelsea's Enzo Fernández, whom the Blues value at £120m.
Meanwhile, Marmoush is heading in the opposite direction, agreeing to join Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan that carries an obligation to buy for an initial £50m, plus up to £10m in potential add-ons, half of which is guaranteed. The Egyptian forward, who City signed from Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2025, will undergo a medical with Spurs before completing the move. No sell-on clause is owed to his former German club. Under the terms of the agreement, Marmoush will sign a four-year contract with Spurs next summer once the loan period concludes, with a one-year option attached.
To help offset Marmoush's exit, City have struck a £34m agreement with Palmeiras for forward Allan Elias, who is expected to fill the void left by Sávio's departure to Tottenham as a wide attacking option.
For Spurs, Marmoush represents another major addition to a summer spending spree that has already seen the north London club splash out £304.5m on players including Jan Paul van Hecke, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Sávio, alongside free-transfer signings Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi. Manager Roberto De Zerbi had hinted at the end of July that a marquee attacking arrival was imminent, describing it as a "bomba" signing, and revealed talks over Sávio had begun just three days after the previous season ended. Marmoush is viewed as a significant upgrade at centre-forward, offering competition for Dominic Solanke and Richarlison, both of whom have struggled with form and fitness in recent times.
