Newcastle United are edging closer to completing the signing of Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City, as the Magpies push to bolster their midfield following a summer of significant departures.
While a transfer fee has yet to be finalised between the two clubs, there is a growing sense of confidence that a deal will eventually be struck for the Spanish international. Gonzalez is expected to become the latest player to leave the Etihad Stadium as part of City's ongoing midfield overhaul, joining Bernardo Silva, Tijjani Reijnders and Rodri in departing the club this summer.
Gonzalez arrived at City from Porto in January 2025 in a deal worth £49million, having previously come through Barcelona's system. Since his move to Manchester, he has featured 59 times for the club, contributing four goals. However, his standing in Pep Guardiola's plans appears to have diminished, as he was an unused substitute during City's 2-1 victory over Bournemouth on Sunday, with centre-back Marc Guehi instead deployed in a midfield role.
City's willingness to let Gonzalez go comes amid a broader restructuring of their midfield options. The club have already agreed terms with Lille for Ayyoub Bouaddi, in a deal that could reach £85million for the Morocco international. Should the Gonzalez transfer also go through, alongside the anticipated £85million sale of Savinho to Tottenham Hotspur, City's summer transfer business would generate close to £300million in player sales. City have also held discussions with Spurs regarding forward Omar Marmoush.
For Newcastle, the pursuit of Gonzalez follows a turbulent summer in the middle of the park. The club previously considered alternatives such as Joao Palhinha and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before turning their attention to the City midfielder as they search for a more seasoned option to add steel and composure to their engine room.
Newcastle's need for reinforcements stems largely from the exits of two key midfielders. Bruno Guimaraes departed for Arsenal in a £75million transfer, while Sandro Tonali completed a big-money £100million move to Tottenham. Those two departures have left a considerable void for new head coach Matthias Jaissle to fill as he shapes his squad for the campaign ahead.
In response, Newcastle have already brought in a pair of younger midfield prospects, signing 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba. Both youngsters were handed their debuts during the club's recent fixture against Liverpool on Sunday, offering an early glimpse of the club's long-term midfield planning. However, the club's hierarchy clearly believes that additional experience is required immediately, hence the pursuit of Gonzalez as a more the seasoned option to help ease the loss of Guimaraes and Tonali.
Beyond midfield, Jaissle is also keen to add further attacking depth to his squad this summer. Despite an injury to new captain Dan Burn, however, the German coach does not view a new centre-back as a priority, suggesting Newcastle's remaining transfer business is likely to be focused on other areas of the pitch as the window progresses.
With City continuing to reshape their own midfield options and Newcastle determined to replace their departed stars with quality, the coming days could prove pivotal in determining whether Gonzalez makes the switch to St James' Park before the transfer deadline.
