Barcelona have lodged a formal protest against local police, accusing officers of using excessive force on supporters outside the Martinez Valero stadium before the club's commanding 5-0 victory over Elche on Sunday.
Footage circulating on social media appeared to capture tense clashes between police and Barcelona fans as they waited in line to enter the stadium in Elche, located in the Alicante province, ahead of the La Liga fixture. The images have prompted the Catalan club to issue a strongly worded statement condemning the treatment of its supporters.
In the statement, Barcelona said the club "condemns the disproportionate use of force against club members and fans during the incidents that took place yesterday in the vicinity of the Martinez Valero stadium ahead of the league game against Elche." The club singled out the arrest of one particular fan, stating that the manner in which he was detained "was disproportionate and that the use of force lacked the necessary justification and appropriateness."
Barcelona further indicated it has reached out to the detained supporter and his relatives, pledging "any support they may require" as the situation is addressed.
Beyond the allegations of physical force, the club also raised concerns over police confiscating Estelada flags from fans outside the ground. The Estelada, a banner associated with the Catalan independence movement, is frequently displayed by sections of the Barcelona fanbase at matches. The club defended supporters' right to carry the flag, describing it as a symbol with legal standing whose display represents a legitimate form of free expression.
