Jean-Philippe Mateta's standing at Crystal Palace has come under fresh scrutiny after it emerged the striker has been challenging the validity of the final year of his contract, a dispute that has already gone through a Premier League tribunal and a Fifa hearing.
Mateta signed for Palace in January 2022 on a deal running until the summer of 2026, with the club holding an option to extend by a further year. Palace triggered that extension in 2024, taking his contract through to June 2027. However, Mateta and his representatives have argued that because the additional year was an option activated unilaterally by the club, it should not be considered legally binding.
The matter was taken to a Premier League independent tribunal last season. While the outcome has not been made public, it is understood Mateta was told the contract remains valid. He then escalated the issue to Fifa, football's global governing body, which ruled shortly before the start of this season that it did not have jurisdiction to intervene. Had Mateta prevailed, he could have become a free agent well ahead of next summer.
Despite the unresolved tension, Mateta featured for 63 minutes in Palace's Premier League opener away at Everton, a match that also marked new head coach Pierre Sage's first competitive game in charge. Palace lost 2-0.
With the transfer window closing on September 1, Palace face a decision on whether to cash in on their striker now or risk losing him for nothing when he becomes eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club in January. Sources suggest that some within the club believe this window represents the last realistic chance to recoup a fee for the 29-year-old, given his contract situation makes a free transfer next summer increasingly likely.
Aston Villa have been repeatedly linked with Mateta, having shown long-term interest dating back to 2024 and reportedly making an approach in January before instead signing Tammy Abraham. Villa's pursuit could gain fresh impetus with Ollie Watkins reportedly closing in on a move to Saudi Arabia.
Mateta's relationship with Palace has fluctuated significantly over the past year. A proposed move to AC Milan in January collapsed at a late stage due to a knee injury, and he was subsequently booed by sections of the Selhurst Park crowd upon his return from injury. That mood shifted dramatically in May when he scored the winning goal in Palace's Uefa Conference League final victory over Rayo Vallecano, and he later earned praise for representing France at the World Cup.
