Hibernian have strengthened their squad ahead of the closure of the transfer window by securing a loan deal for Manchester United midfielder Jacob Devaney, with the Edinburgh club given the option to sign the player permanently once the loan spell concludes.
The 19-year-old, who qualifies for the Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level, returns to Scottish football having previously spent time on loan at St Mirren, where he made 18 appearances for the Paisley outfit. During that spell, the young midfielder contributed one goal and one assist while playing further forward than his usual role.
At Old Trafford, Devaney has been viewed as a promising talent, having captained Manchester United's Premier League 2 side during the opening months of last season. He operates primarily as a deep-lying playmaker, a position that requires composure on the ball and the ability to dictate the tempo of matches from deep areas of the pitch.
Devaney's involvement with United's first-team setup extended into this summer, when he featured in pre-season friendlies against Wrexham and Norwegian side Rosenborg. He found the net in the latter fixture, offering a glimpse of his attacking potential despite his deeper role in midfield.
