Enzo Maresca marked his first Premier League match in charge of Manchester City with a bold tactical experiment that ultimately delivered a dramatic victory over Bournemouth, as centre-back Marc Guehi was deployed in a holding midfield role and scored a crucial late header to spark a comeback win at the Etihad Stadium.
The decision raised eyebrows even before kick-off, with Maresca selecting a lineup featuring six players capable of playing in defense. Confusion turned to surprise during the warm-up when it became apparent that Guehi, signed after his time as Crystal Palace captain, would line up as a defensive midfielder rather than in his customary central defensive position. When referee Jarred Gillett started the match, the unconventional setup was confirmed.
For much of the afternoon, the move appeared to be backfiring. City had entered the fixture already under pressure after a heavy 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield the previous weekend, and a second straight loss looked increasingly likely as the match wore on. However, in the 84th minute, Guehi rose to head home his tenth Premier League goal, turning the tide. Josko Gvardiol added a composed finish soon after to complete the turnaround and secure the three points.
Guehi's overall performance in his unfamiliar role was statistically impressive: he won all three of his tackles, more than any other player on the pitch, completed 94.9 percent of his 59 attempted passes, and won eight of his 11 individual duels.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Guehi reflected on the experiment, saying: "It was just an idea the manager had, we worked on it in the week. We're trying different things, trying different solutions for the team. I'm glad today it paid off in the end." He also told BBC Sport that despite limited experience in midfield, he felt supported by his teammates: "I enjoyed it simply because I got so much help from so many people. When you have that you feel comfortable to just go out and play and do what you can for the team."
Maresca defended his selection after the game, telling BBC's Match of the Day: "Marc Guehi has never played as a midfielder, today he was very good, so I am happy with the effort from the players. Sometimes you visualise things. I know Marc from Palace and I always thought he could play as a midfielder because he is very good. So we tried it for a few days and I think he was quite good." The Italian coach suggested the role could become a more permanent option, describing Guehi as offering
