Manchester United's season began with a setback as they suffered a defeat away to newly-promoted Hull City, leaving manager Michael Carrick to address both the result and swirling transfer speculation surrounding Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.
United found themselves in trouble early, falling two goals behind by half-time on Humberside despite fielding a freshly assembled midfield combination of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. The visitors attempted to alter the course of the match after the break, introducing Marcus Rashford, Benjamin Sesko and Kobbie Mainoo from the bench, but none of the substitutions proved decisive enough to salvage a positive result against their newly-promoted opponents.

"One game doesn't change the whole direction of everything, but we need to be aware where we need to improve," he explained. "We have a bit to improve on, it was never going to be perfect. Going behind makes it more difficult, against a promoted team at home, we can't give them much and they had opportunities. We're disappointed but it won't knock us."
The defeat represents an early test for Carrick, who now faces a period of work on the training ground before United's next fixture, a home clash against Ipswich Town. The manager will be eager to see improvement from his revamped midfield pairing, with Santos and Tielemans given the nod to start against Hull in what appeared to be an experimental setup that ultimately struggled to control proceedings against well-drilled opposition determined to make home advantage count.
The introduction of attacking reinforcements at the break, including Rashford and new signing Sesko, was designed to inject some urgency and creativity into United's play, yet the visitors were unable to find a way back into the contest. Mainoo's introduction as well came too late to have a meaningful impact on the outcome.
