Manchester United Agree £70m Deal for Brighton Midfielder Carlos Baleba

Manchester United have struck an agreement worth up to £70m to sign Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba, marking the latest significant addition to Michael Carrick's rebuilding squad this summer.

The two Premier League clubs finalised the terms of the transfer on Friday evening after a whirlwind week of negotiations, clearing the way for the 22-year-old Cameroon international to undergo a medical with United over the weekend. The structure of the deal sees United pay an initial £65m, with a further £5m available through performance-related add-ons. Brighton, known for their shrewd business in the transfer market, have also secured a sell-on clause that will entitle them to a percentage of any future sale.

The fee represents a considerable reduction from the valuation Brighton had reportedly placed on Baleba as the transfer window approached its close, suggesting United were able to negotiate a more favourable price than initially anticipated.

Baleba arrived at Brighton from French club Lille in 2023 and has since established himself as one of the most sought-after young midfielders in English football. His move to Old Trafford comes at an awkward moment physically, however, as the player is currently recovering from an ankle injury sustained during Brighton's pre-season training camp in Austria.

United's pursuit of Baleba was driven by a clear need to bolster their midfield options following a summer of turnover in that area of the squad. The Old Trafford club identified Baleba as a target this week after already bringing in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Those two arrivals were themselves partly necessitated by the departure of long-serving Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, whose contract expired, and the anticipated exit of Manuel Ugarte, who was expected to leave Old Trafford before suffering a serious knee injury while on international duty with Uruguay at the World Cup.

Once completed, the Baleba transfer will push United's total summer spending to approximately £153m, underlining the scale of the squad overhaul being undertaken at the club.

Beyond his primary role in central midfield, Baleba's arrival could have wider tactical implications for United. The player, who is left-footed, has occasionally featured at left-back during his time in England, and there is speculation he could provide competition or cover for Luke Shaw in that position. United's regular right-backs, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui, have both also been deployed on the left flank in the past, giving Carrick several options as he considers whether the club still needs to pursue a specialist left-back before the window closes.

Baleba's reported enthusiasm to join United is said to have played a role in accelerating the pace of negotiations between the two clubs. His athleticism and energy are expected to add a new dimension to United's midfield unit.

Carrick's side already have a strengthened engine room at their disposal for the upcoming fixture list. England international Kobbie Mainoo, along with new signings Santos and Tielemans, will all be available when United travel to face newly promoted Hull City in Saturday's lunchtime Premier League kick-off.
