As Manchester United prepare to open their Premier League campaign at Hull City, optimism has returned to Old Trafford following a productive end to last season under Michael Carrick, who guided the club to third place and a return to Champions League football. Attention now turns to whether the club can build on that foundation and mount a genuine title challenge, with the transfer window entering its final stretch.
United have already addressed certain areas of concern. Senne Lammens has settled well into the goalkeeper role since his arrival last summer, and while he may not yet be the finished article, he is considered more than adequate for now, with room to develop further.
Midfield has also seen significant investment, with Youri Tielemans arriving from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos joining from Chelsea. The club are also closing in on a deal for Brighton's Carlos Baleba, with a £60 million bid reportedly tabled for the Cameroon international. Baleba was a target last summer too, and his arrival would complete what many see as a thorough midfield overhaul. Combined with existing options Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount, United appear far better equipped in the middle of the park than they were a year ago, even after losing Casemiro.
Defense, however, remains a pressing concern. Of United's nine senior defenders, only Matthijs de Ligt is regarded as possessing the quality required for a title-winning squad, and even he has only recently returned from a long-term injury sustained in November. Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven carry potential but are not yet at the required level, meaning Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are likely to continue as the starting centre-back pairing this season. Despite United's heavy spending in recent years, both remain prone to costly errors and lack the physical presence demanded at the top of the Premier League. They may be sufficient for now, but not for the club's long-term ambitions — a new centre-back arrival is expected to be targeted in 2027 rather than this summer.
Left-back is viewed as the area most likely to see movement before the window closes. Noussair Mazraoui has been dependable if unremarkable on the right, while Diogo Dalot continues to offer reliability mixed with inconsistency. On the left, Patrick Dorgu's ongoing experiment as a winger appears to be faltering, raising doubts about whether he is currently equipped to play left-back at this level, despite showing promise as a squad option. Luke Shaw, at 31, is nearing the end of his prime, prompting the club to search for a long-term successor. A move for Newcastle's Lewis Hall appears to have stalled due to the Magpies' £70 million valuation, but United have also been linked with Barcelona's Alejandro Balde, RB Leipzig's David Raum, and Racing Santander's young defender Jorge Salinas.
Up front, United look well-stocked following last summer's additions of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, while Marcus Rashford's return from his loan spell at Barcelona adds further firepower. Both Rashford and Amad will be expected to deliver consistent performances to justify their places. There remains a possibility United could pursue a back-up striker — with Ivan Toney and Jean-Philippe Mateta among the names mentioned — but such a move likely depends on Joshua Zirkzee departing the club, given financial constraints. Mbeumo and Rashford both offer alternatives as auxiliary strikers in the meantime.
With just over a week remaining in the transfer window, left-back appears to be the priority area for United to strengthen before deadline day arrives.
