Chelsea have turned down an initial loan proposal from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, though talks between the two clubs are continuing as the Ukrainian looks to find a temporary new home for the season.
According to reports, Leeds' opening offer fell short of what Chelsea were hoping to secure for the 25-year-old, but there remains genuine appetite from the Yorkshire club to push the deal forward. Mudryk himself is said to view a move to Elland Road favourably as he seeks regular football to reignite his career.
The forward has been out of action for around 20 months after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium. With his suspension lifted in July, Mudryk has been reintegrated into Chelsea's plans under new head coach Xabi Alonso, featuring in several substitute appearances during the club's pre-season campaign.
Despite interest from clubs in Italy and from Strasbourg - a club under the same BlueCo ownership umbrella as Chelsea - Mudryk has made clear his preference to stay in England and continue playing in the Premier League. That has put Leeds in pole position, largely because they are prepared to take him on loan without including an option to make the deal permanent, a structure that suits Chelsea as it allows them to retain full control over the player's long-term future while Leeds cover his wages.
Brentford had also been touted as a possible destination, but the west London club wanted the flexibility of a future permanent option attached to any loan, a condition Chelsea were unwilling to accept. The Bees have long held an interest in Mudryk, having tried to sign him even before Chelsea completed a deal worth an initial £61m to bring him from Shakhtar Donetsk back in 2023.
Coventry City, managed by former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, have also registered their interest in taking Mudryk on loan, while the possibility of a switch to Strasbourg has not been completely dismissed. Chelsea are reportedly also weighing up sending other squad members, such as midfielder Dario Essugo, to the Ligue 1 side as part of a broader restructuring of their squad.
Chelsea have been busy in the market this summer, bringing in four new faces: winger Harry Wilson from Fulham, defender Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo, goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City, and centre-back Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach. Leeds, for their part, have already strengthened their attacking options by signing Wilson themselves and remain active as the transfer window nears its close.
Elsewhere, Chelsea are working to trim their squad further before the deadline. Interest from Leeds in striker Liam Delap has reportedly cooled, though the forward remains available for a permanent transfer, with Chelsea valuing him at around £50million. Defender Tosin Adarabioyo is also up for sale, while Crystal Palace are said to be closing in on a season-long loan deal for centre-back Axel Disasi.
A return to full first-team involvement at Stamford Bridge this season is not viewed as the likely outcome for Mudryk, though sources suggest that scenario has not been entirely ruled out. For now, all parties are working towards finalising the terms of a temporary exit that suits both the player's ambitions and Chelsea's broader squad planning.
