Mourinho Confident He Can Blend Bellingham, Vinicius and Mbappe at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has moved to dispel concerns that Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe cannot thrive together in the same Real Madrid attack, insisting the trio's individual strengths are far from incompatible.

The question of how to accommodate all three stars has lingered over the Bernabeu for two seasons, with Bellingham himself acknowledging last year, ahead of a Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich, that fitting into a fluid front line alongside Mbappe and Vinicius could sometimes come at the expense of his own game. "It's difficult, because I still feel like there have been many games where we've mixed really well," Bellingham said at the time. "It can be difficult when we're all on the same side. We're fluid, we have freedom to move around, at times that can disorganise a bit, but with both of them, you have to trust in their ability."

Mourinho, who takes charge of a squad packed with attacking riches, pointed to the World Cup as evidence the three can coexist effectively, noting that Bellingham, Mbappe and Vinicius all excelled while representing England, France and Brazil respectively. Still, he conceded that replicating those international roles inside a single club side presents a far tougher challenge. "It's harder for Mourinho to find the perfect set-up for all three. It's harder. But here we are. I want all three of them to feel comfortable on the field together," Mourinho said. "I'm very confident that you'll say it's great when the three play together because they're high-quality players, and I don't think their positions are incompatible either. I'm very confident that we're going to have a great season with them."

Goals have rarely been the issue. Mbappe scored 42 times in all competitions last season, while Vinicius added 22, and Mbappe has since returned from the World Cup having netted 10 times for France. The bigger challenge for Mourinho lies in spacing and structure. Last season, Mbappe operated centrally with Vinicius drifting in from the left, but the pair often gravitated toward the same zones. That prompted Bellingham to drop deeper to add balance, a shift that blunted his own attacking output — his eight goals and five assists in 40 appearances marked a steep decline from the 23 goals and 13 assists he delivered in his debut campaign.

At the World Cup, England boss Thomas Tuchel deployed Bellingham as a number 10 just behind Harry Kane, a role that yielded seven goals in eight matches and saw him spend 71% of his minutes in an advanced position, compared with just 28% in La Liga. Freeing up space between Mbappe and Vinicius could allow Mourinho to push Bellingham back into that more productive zone.

The Portuguese has previously proven capable of managing a star-studded front line, having overseen a Real Madrid side featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain that set a La Liga scoring record of 121 goals in 2011-12. This time, he also has a new option in 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande, signed after a breakout campaign at RB Leipzig, where only Barcelona's Lamine Yamal completed more dribbles across Europe's top five leagues. Diomande also ranked among the league's best for regaining possession in the final third.

Beyond tactics, Mourinho has also sought to reset the dressing room following a difficult stretch that included three managerial changes and no major trophies. He addressed the fallout between Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde, who were both fined after a heated clash last season that left Valverde needing hospital treatment. "I arrived with a lot of information... but I decided to start from scratch," Mourinho said. "What I've seen isn't about peace - it's about normality, friendship, and cooperation. It's as if nothing ever happened."

Having previously delivered La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup during his first spell at the club, Mourinho now faces the task of restoring both discipline and silverware to a Real Madrid side brimming with attacking talent.
