Ezri Konsa has sealed his switch to Arsenal, becoming the Premier League champions' latest signing in a deal worth up to £55m, including add-ons. The 28-year-old England defender has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at the Emirates, with the option of an additional year, ending a six-year spell at Aston Villa.
The transfer, finalized on Wednesday after weeks of negotiation, sees Villa receive an initial fee reported at £51m, with a further £4m available depending on performance-related clauses. Arsenal had initially baulked at a £60m valuation placed on the centre-back, but a compromise was eventually struck between the two clubs.
Speaking after completing his move, Konsa expressed pride at joining one of Europe's elite sides. "It's a privilege to be here and can't wait to get started," he said. "I want to keep winning, I'm hungry to win and that's what I'm here for. It's a proud moment for me and my family to play for one of the best teams in the world."
The defender also revealed he had leaned on Arsenal's England internationals for insight into life at the club during this summer's World Cup, where he played every match for Thomas Tuchel's side as they reached the semi-finals before claiming bronze with victory over France. "They said I'll enjoy it. I'm looking forward to training with them and playing with them," Konsa said of conversations with Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta praised the qualities Konsa brings to Mikel Arteta's squad. "Ezri is a defender of high quality, whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence have established him as one of the Premier League's most consistent performers," Berta said. "Being comfortable in both central defence and at right-back, Ezri will bring valuable versatility to our squad while maintaining the high defensive standards which are fundamental to our challenge of winning major trophies."
The timing of the signing is significant for Arsenal, who face a defensive crisis at the start of the new campaign. William Saliba, one half of last season's title-winning centre-back pairing alongside Gabriel Magalhaes, is sidelined for an extended period with a long-term back injury. Meanwhile, first-choice right-back Jurrien Timber is also unavailable due to a groin problem. That left Ben White as Arsenal's only fit specialist right-back option, with young centre-back Cristhian Mosquera the sole recognised right-sided partner for Gabriel.
Konsa's versatility—having operated comfortably at both centre-back and right-back during his time at Villa Park—makes him an ideal fit to plug the gap. He made 286 appearances for Villa after arriving from Brentford in 2019, contributing to their Europa League triumph in Istanbul this past May, the club's first European trophy since 1982. He also helped Unai Emery's side secure a fourth-placed Premier League finish last season, scoring twice.
Having undergone a medical on Thursday, Konsa was not registered in time to feature in Arsenal's season opener against Coventry, but he is expected to have a full week of training before a highly anticipated return to Villa Park on August 31. There is a real possibility he could make his Gunners debut against his former employers.
The deal represents Arsenal's fifth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle, Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, goalkeeper Illan Meslier, and the permanent capture of Piero Hincapie. For Villa, Konsa's exit continues a summer of significant squad turnover driven by financial regulations, following the departures of Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Lucas Digne.
