West Bromwich Albion forward Aune Heggebo has been suspended for two matches after the Football Association ruled that his decisive strike in last Saturday's 2-1 victory over Norwich City was scored illegally with his hand.
The Norwegian international's goal came in the 75th minute at Carrow Road, when he connected with a left-wing delivery from Jimmy-Jay Morgan. Television replays showed the ball striking his arm before crossing the line, handing the Baggies what proved to be the winning goal in the Championship encounter.
The FA pursued the matter under Rule E3.1, accusing Heggebo of deliberately misleading the match officials by using his hand to find the net. A regulatory panel considered the case on Thursday and chose to uphold both the misconduct charge and the resulting ban, rejecting an appeal lodged by West Brom.
The club had argued that the goal should not be treated as intentional handball, pointing out that the ball's path had been altered after it deflected off the Norwich goalkeeper. In their submission, Albion contended that this deflection significantly changed the trajectory of the ball, leaving Heggebo with barely a tenth of a second to adjust his body position before contact was made.
Despite that argument, the panel sided with the FA's assessment that the striker had gained an unfair advantage through deliberate contact with the ball. As a result, Heggebo will now miss two fixtures: Sunday's Championship match against Burnley and West Brom's Carabao Cup second-round tie away at Premier League side Newcastle United on 26 August.
Notably, this case is understood to represent the first instance of a player being sanctioned for a handball goal under this specific rule since it was introduced ahead of the 2024-25 season, making it something of a landmark decision in English football's disciplinary history.
Norwich boss Philippe Clement was vocal about the incident immediately after the final whistle, describing it as a pivotal juncture in the match. "I think this is a clear-cut goal that should be disallowed," he said, reflecting the frustration felt by the Canaries at conceding what they viewed as an illegitimate goal in a tight contest.
West Bromwich Albion have signaled their intention to seek further guidance from the governing body regarding the practical application of the rule. The club confirmed they would formally write to the FA requesting clarity on what constitutes a reasonable reaction from a player when faced with similar split-second circumstances during a match.
