Cancelo Completes Permanent Return to Barcelona After Al-Hilal Departure

Joao Cancelo has sealed a permanent switch back to Barcelona, putting pen to paper on a three-year contract following the mutual termination of his deal with Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.

The Portuguese full-back's move to Saudi Arabia in 2024, when he left Manchester City on a three-year agreement, proved short-lived. Cancelo spent the closing stages of last season on loan back at Camp Nou, contributing to Barcelona's La Liga title triumph. With his exit from Al-Hilal now finalized, the 32-year-old entered the summer as a free agent before quickly agreeing terms to rejoin the Catalan giants on a lasting basis.

Expressing his delight at the move, Cancelo did not hide his emotional attachment to the club. "It's my dream," he said. "I'm where I want to be and I am very happy. I like the club, I identify with it. I feel loved here and I promise to give everything for this club."

This latest transfer marks the third occasion Cancelo has represented Barcelona, though it is the first time the arrangement is permanent rather than a loan. His footballing journey has taken him across several of Europe's top leagues since he first arrived in Spain back in 2014, joining Valencia on loan from Benfica. That spell was followed by a temporary stint at Inter Milan during the 2017-18 campaign, before he made permanent transfers to Juventus in 2018 and then Manchester City in 2019, where he established himself as one of the division's most versatile defenders.

Cancelo's City career included a loan spell at Bayern Munich to close out the 2022-23 season, followed by a temporary move to Barcelona for the entirety of 2023-24, during which he played a role in the club's domestic success. That loan appears to have cemented his fondness for the Camp Nou setup, ultimately paving the way for this permanent reunion.

The defender's arrival comes amid a busy period of transfer activity for Hansi Flick's side. Barcelona also this week finalized the signing of Rodri, Cancelo's former Manchester City teammate, in a deal reportedly worth around £65m to the English champions. The Spain international midfielder becomes one of the marquee additions to Flick's squad as the club looks to build on last season's title-winning campaign.

Barcelona's summer rebuild has also seen wingers Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi brought into the fold, adding further attacking depth and versatility to Flick's options out wide. However, the reshaping of the squad has come with departures too. Forward Ferran Torres has left the club to join Paris St-Germain, while veteran striker Robert Lewandowski has moved on to MLS outfit Chicago Fire, bringing an end to his time as one of Barcelona's most prolific goalscorers in recent seasons.

With Cancelo now back in the fold on a permanent basis, Flick will have another experienced, versatile option at his disposal as Barcelona prepare to defend their La Liga crown and pursue further success on multiple fronts next season. The full-back's familiarity with the squad and the club's playing style, built up across three separate spells, is expected to help him settle quickly into Flick's plans.
