Aston Villa have finalised the signing of Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma, a move that throws further uncertainty over the long-term future of Argentine number one Emiliano Martinez ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
The 23-year-old Suzuki, who was born in New Jersey but grew up in Urawa, Japan, arrives in a deal reportedly worth up to 35 million euros (£30 million), as reported by The Athletic. He becomes one of Villa's most significant additions of the summer window, joining a squad that will be competing in the Champions League this season after finishing fourth in the Premier League and lifting the Europa League last term.
Suzuki's career has taken him through Belgium's Sint-Truiden, where he moved in 2023, before he switched to Parma in Italy the following year. He has since established himself as Japan's first-choice goalkeeper and enjoyed a standout showing at this summer's World Cup. Among his highlights was a remarkable save to deny Brazil forward Vinicius Jr, tipping a effort against the post during a tense knockout encounter.
Japan progressed comfortably through their group stage, defeating Tunisia and Sweden while holding the Netherlands to a 2-2 draw, before their run was ended by Brazil in the round of 32. Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli struck a late goal to send the South Americans through and end Japan's tournament.
Suzuki's arrival raises fresh questions over the position of Martinez, who has been Villa's undisputed starting goalkeeper for six seasons and was part of Argentina's triumphant 2022 World Cup squad. Despite his standing, Martinez has flirted with a departure in each of the last two transfer windows, and speculation intensified recently when Juventus were reported to be interested in bringing him to Turin.
That move now appears to have stalled, with the Serie A club instead turning their attention to Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who looks set to join Juventus on a season-long loan. That development leaves Martinez's situation unresolved just as the new campaign gets under way.
Adding to the sense that his position may be under threat, Martinez was left out of Villa's squad for last week's UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, fuelling further speculation about where he stands in manager's plans going forward.
Villa have also been busy strengthening elsewhere in defence. Following left-back Lucas Digne's move to Paris Saint-Germain, the club moved to sign Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old Italian, who previously won the Europa League during his time at Atalanta, is set to challenge Ian Maatsen for the starting left-back role. Ruggeri has represented Italy at youth level but has not yet earned a senior cap.
The close-season has also brought departures for Villa, with midfielder Youri Tielemans and forward Morgan Rogers among those to leave the club, meaning manager Unai Emery will need to manage a squad in transition as they balance domestic and European commitments.
Villa's Premier League campaign begins away at Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, a fixture that could offer an early indication of how the goalkeeping situation, and the wider squad reshuffle, will unfold under the new setup.
