Chalobah Embraces New Chapter at Como After Emotional Chelsea Exit

After nearly two decades at Chelsea, Trevoh Chalobah has closed a defining chapter of his life and opened another, completing a £31million move to Serie A side Como 1907 this summer. The 27-year-old England defender departed Stamford Bridge as a man who had grown from a nervous academy prospect into a Premier League title winner, leaving behind a career built, in his own words, on resilience.

Chalobah's rise through Chelsea's youth system was not without doubt. He has spoken about breaking down in tears in the car after training sessions alongside future England teammates Mason Mount and Declan Rice, feeling he wasn't good enough to make it. Years later, he found himself frozen out entirely, placed in the so-called "bomb squad" of unwanted players under former head coach Enzo Maresca in 2024 and shipped out on loan to Crystal Palace.

Yet each setback was followed by a comeback. Chalobah was recalled from that Palace loan in January 2025 and went on to make a career-high 47 appearances in his final season at Chelsea, finishing with 151 appearances in total across his time at the club he supported as a boy.

"That's one of my attributes and one of my skills that I have, bouncing back from things and not allowing anything to get to me," Chalobah said, reflecting on his journey from Como's pre-season training camp in Teddington. "Not just in football, in life, things are going to happen which are sometimes out of your hands and out of your control."

The defender lived through Chelsea's turbulent ownership change in 2022, when Roman Abramovich sold the club to Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, triggering a wave of squad turnover. Despite the upheaval, Chalobah insists he holds no bitterness toward his boyhood club. "I always wanted to play for Chelsea no matter what the circumstances were, I always believed that I could do it," he said. "I'm grateful for every setback, every challenge, every trophy I've won... I will always keep the blue flag flying."

Chalobah's move to Italy is not his first taste of continental football — he spent part of the 2020-21 season on loan at Lorient in France, following the path taken by his older brother Nathaniel, who played for Napoli. It was during that loan spell that he first encountered Thomas Tuchel, then managing Paris Saint-Germain. Tuchel later gave Chalobah his Chelsea debut and, years afterward, called him up to England's World Cup squad as a late replacement for the injured Tino Livramento while Chalobah was on holiday in New York.

"The story's already written before I was born," Chalobah reflected. "He's the one that gave me my debut for Chelsea and he's the same manager that called me up for the World Cup last minute... I think certain things are meant to happen and I'm grateful for that."

England's World Cup campaign ended in a semi-final loss to Argentina, though the team recovered to claim bronze with a 6-4 win over France. "No one wants to come third. You're just one step away from the final," Chalobah admitted. "It was definitely hard for the players... But we learn from this and be proud of what we've done and achieved."

Now at Como, Chalobah reunites with manager Cesc Fabregas, a familiar face from his early days training alongside Chelsea's first team. Fabregas, who has guided Como from Serie B to Champions League qualification in just two seasons, played a central role in persuading Chalobah to choose the club over rival interest from Inter Milan.

"He explained what he wanted, the way he sees the club and how he sees me fitting into this club," Chalobah said of Fabregas's pitch, citing his own experience, physicality and leadership as key attributes he can offer. "It wasn't an overnight thing, it was a very thoughtful and hard decision... I'm really excited for this new chapter in my beautiful story that I've had so far."
